Elderly Walter Rewnicki, part of the congregation of the St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, was just counting the proceeds from their weekly fundraising bingo game, when a shotgun wielding creep entered the premises and demanded that he hand the money over. The eighty-six year old pensioner wanted to resist the gunman but another elderly man who was with him at the time told Walter not to resist and hand the money over.
These two elderly gentlemen were part of a group of six bingo players who were about ready to leave the bingo social at about 10pm when the cheeky robber burst in and demanded that they had over “his” money. He said, “that’s my money”. The money was actually destined to pay the electricity bill to keep the lights switched on in the church social bingo hall. Rewnicki said that he got really angry when he saw the shotgun. Police have asked him not to reveal how much money was taken in the robbery, but they had a good turnout on the night, about 90 people played.
Bingo is a very important fundraising factor in the community and has assisted greatly in keeping the small church open.
