I picked up on a news article regarding bingo in the local press; this news item tickled my fancy because the young man who wrote it, quite simple does not know what he is talking about. He calls the game of bingo “simply faceless gambling”. Drawn to playing a game of bingo at his local club by one of the many TV adverts we see so many of today. The young reporter went to a local bingo club and instead of the bright and air fun experience he expected, he says that he found a half empty bingo hall, frequented by people who in the most sat alone, and spent the evening watching people spend too much money, while being tutted and shushed for talking, laughing and even dabbing too loudly.

Essentially he says that he found the game was not fun, and found it easy to understand why bingo clubs in the UK were closing down, and he called it an “every man for himself betting frenzy.” I find it hard to believe that this young man had such a bad experience at a bingo club. He does not mention which bingo club it was so they are not even able to make a rebuttal. He obviously doesn’t understand the dynamics of bingo and the socially interactive outlet the game allows many people.

I would like to state categorically that in the UK bingo is not “simply faceless gambling” and I hope that this young man reads this, perhaps he should give online bingo a try and see how he likes that!

It is a sad state of affairs when old bingo halls close down, but it is sadder still when developers look past the architectural merits of these old buildings t an decide to just flatten them regardless. The latest building to fall prey to developers is the old Odeon Cinema in Bradford which opened in 1930. The seventy-seven year old former cinema and bingo hall has been earmarked for demolition despite the Bradford Odeon Rescue Group making six applications not to have it demolished, the building is still considered to not be of enough architectural interest to be saved.

The former bingo hall and cinema is being surveyed in advance of a controversial planning application to replace it with a development called the New Victoria Place scheme. The planning application include replacing the old bingo club building with a £55 million plan for offices, apartments and a hotel, thes in themselves required the old bingo club to be taken down.

It was also found that the building contained enough asbestos to be able to cause a serious health threat, and this is in essence another reason why plans to save the building were turned down.
